Invented by mechanical engineer Richard James in 1943 during an experiment with tension coils, the Slinky was born when a spring accidentally fell to the floor and began to “walk.” Two years later, it made its debut at Gimbels Department Store during the Christmas season—and sold out instantly.

Since then, more than 300 million Slinkys have been sold worldwide. In 2000, this timeless toy was inducted into the National Toy Hall of Fame.

Seventy-five years later, the Slinky continues to be a favorite for kids and adults everywhere. It’s fun for a girl or a boy—and makes a perfect gift, stocking stuffer, prize, or present.
