Leonardo da Vinci Aerial Screw
One of Leonardo’s most iconic images, the Aerial Screw (also known as the helicopter) shows da Vinci’s ingenuity and his obsession with flying. While the idea may never have got off the ground, it gives an insight into how he approached the challenge of human powered flight.
Although it is often called a helicopter, the lift works more like Archimedes’ screw than the rotors of a helicopter. Our model uses one of the bevel gears he drew in his codices to create a 2 to 1 increase in the speed of the crankshaft, so the mast spins quickly.
A great kit for beginner to advanced model makers and a fun way to learn about gears and flight. Takes 1 to 3 hours to make (the glue has to dry!). It works well and looks really cool on a shelf.
Age rating: 9+. Can be built by youngsters from around 9 years old, and it is interesting for kids of all ages. Some model making skills would be helpful.
