When people ask us what toys are really worth buying, we always think about the ones that stayed in rotation in our own home year after year. Long before we owned a toy store, these were some of the toys gifted to us when our first daughter was little. She’s now 8, her younger sister is 4, and these toys are still being played with regularly. They’re simple, open-ended, and versatile enough to grow with kids through every stage of play.
If you’re looking for timeless toys for kids, these are some of our favourite examples: toys that started with simple stacking and sensory play and evolved into imaginative worlds, building challenges, pretend play, and more.
1. Sarah’s Silks Playsilks
Playsilks have truly been one of the most versatile toys in our home. When our oldest was a baby, we used them for peekaboo and gentle sensory play. As she got older, they became capes, costumes, and dress-up accessories. Now they’re still part of pretend play all the time — spread out as picnic blankets and tiny pretend tables, or draped into whatever scene the girls are dreaming up that day.
2. Classic Wooden Blocks
A good set of wooden blocks is one of those gifts that never seems to lose its value. At first, play was simple: stacking towers, knocking them down, and starting over again. Later, our oldest used the blocks to entertain her younger sister. Now they get pulled out for even more elaborate play, like building obstacle courses and ramps for remote control cars. It’s amazing how a simple toy can keep evolving as kids grow.

Magnetic tiles are still incredibly popular in our house. They’ve been loved through so many stages, from simple early building to more creative structures, houses, towers, and all kinds of imaginative designs. They’re one of those toys kids come back to again and again because there are always new ways to build.
4. Mini Animal Figurines
Mini animal figurines, especially Schleich-style animals, have also been such a lasting favourite. They’ve been part of endless pretend play, little worlds, storytelling setups, and even bath-time fun. They’re small, easy to mix into other kinds of play, and somehow always seem to come back out, no matter the age.
Looking back, these are the toys I’m most grateful we had: simple, open-ended, and able to grow alongside our kids. They’ve been played with for years by two different children in completely different ways, which to me is the best sign of a toy that truly stands the test of time.
